CPT Brooks


CPT Matthew Brooks began the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) in 2003 at Virginia Tech where he graduated in 2007 with a bachelor of science in Business Information Technology and a minor in Leadership. He graduated as a Distinguished Military Graduate (DMG) and Summa Cum Laude from the university. Upon graduation in May 2007 he was assigned for the summer to Fort Lewis, Washington as a part of the Leadership Development & Assessment Course (LDAC) where he was a member of the Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) and Combative committees.

Following his assignment at Fort Lewis, CPT Brooks attended the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma from October 2007 to April 2008. Upon graduation he was assigned to the 2-12th Field Artillery Battalion, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division out of Fort Lewis, Washington.

While assigned to the 2-12th Field Artillery, CPT Brooks served as a Battery Fire Direction Officer (FDO) and Headquarters Battery Executive Officer (XO). He deployed with the unit to Baghdad in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) from August 2009 to August 2010.

Upon completion of his deployment to Iraq, CPT Brooks was sent to Fort Huachuca, Arizona for the Military Intelligence Captain’s Career Course (MICCC) where he completed to the requirements to transition from a field artillery to military intelligence officer.

After finishing the MICCC, CPT Brooks was assigned in September 2011 to the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division out of Fort Stewart, Georgia. There he served for six months as the Brigade Assistant Intelligence Officer before being assigned as the Battalion S2 (Intelligence Officer) for 2-7th Infantry Battalion in March 2012.

CPT Brooks completed his second deployment with 2-7th Infantry Battalion from August 2012 to June 2013 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) to Regional Control (RC) North Afghanistan. There he served as the Special Operations Task Force (SOTF) intelligence officer for northern Afghanistan while working with U.S. Special Forces. Upon completion of his deployment to Afghanistan, CPT Brooks returned to becoming the Brigade Assistant Intelligence Officer from October 2013 to December 2014.

In January 2015, CPT Brooks was assigned to the University of Illinois at Chicago Army ROTC Detachment where he currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Military Science instructing the freshmen ROTC Cadets and serving as the overall Detachment Operations Officer.

CPT Brooks has completed the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course, Army Combative Level III course, Military Intelligence Captain’s Career Course, and Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance Synchronization Manager Course.

His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal (3rd Award), and Army Achievement Medal (3rd Award). CPT Brooks has been inducted in the Order of Saint Barbara as a prior member of the Field Artillery branch.
