MSG Wenzel enlisted in the United States Army in 1992 and completed Basic Training at Fort Leonardwood, MO. Upon completion of Basic and Advanced Individual Training he completed Basic Airborne Course at Fort Benning GA. He was then assigned to 1-17th CAV at Fort Bragg, NC.
In 1996 MSG Wenzel was inserted into a One Station Unit Training cycle at Fort Knox, KY in order to be trained as a Cavalry Scout. Upon completion of training at Fort Knox, he was then assigned as Section Leader with 3rd Squadron 2nd ACR at Fort Polk, LA. While assigned with 2nd ACR he deployed to Bosnia and Herzegovina from July 1997 to June 1998.
In 1999 he was reassigned to 4-7 Cavalry at Camp Garry Owen Korea. While in Korea he served as a Bradley Gunner, Commander, and as a Section Sergeant. He attended the Precision Gunner Training and was certified as an Instructor/Operator for the Bradley Unit Conduct of Fire Trainer.
After leaving Korea in 2000 MSG Wenzel served as a Scout Section Leader and as an Operation NCO in 1-12IN BN, 4th ID at Fort Carson, CO. While assigned to 1-12th IN, he attended Pathfinder school and deployed to Operations Intrinsic Action and Iraqi Freedom (OIF).
After OIF I, he was sent to Fort Campbell, KY where he was assigned to 3/327th IN before they were reflagged to 1-32nd CAV. While assigned to Fort Campbell, MSG Wenzel served as a Senior Scout, Platoon Sergeant, Platoon Leader, Senior Operations NCO, and as a First Sergeant. He deployed twice to Operation Iraqi Freedom and once to Operation Enduring Freedom with 1-32 CAV.
Upon returning from Operation Enduring Freedom in 2011, MSG Wenzel was reassigned to 4th CAV BDE, Fort Knox, KY from 2011-2013. During this time he served as a Team Chief for an OC team that trained Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRT) and Infantry Battalions on Army Warrior Tasks and Gunnery Skills. He worked closely with the Department of State and USAID to plan, coordinate and train the PRT Leadership, on District Stability Framework, in preparation of their deployments to Afghanistan.
MSG Wenzel was assigned to the 2-9 IN “Manchu” Battalion and served as a First Sergeant of a tank company and later as the HHC First Sergeant for the “Manchu” Battalion. His tank company was awarded the Draper Award for Leadership Excellence.
MSG Wenzel has completed PLDC, BNCOC, ANCOC, Battle Staff NCO Course, First Sergeant Course, Basic Airborne, Air Assault, and Pathfinder Course. He has also received his Associate’s Degree in General Studies, and is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics.
His awards include the Bronze Star Medal (2nd Award), Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Award), Army Commendation Medal (4th Award), Army Achievement Medal (4th Award), and the Army Good Conduct Award (6th Award). He has also been awarded the Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Award (3rd Award), Army Superior Unit Award (2nd Award) and the Combat Action Badge. MSG Wenzel is a member of the Excellence in Armor program and has been inducted in the Order of Saint George (Bronze Medallion).
MSG Wenzel is married to the former Barbara Ford, from Colorado Springs, CO and they have three children and one grandson.
